Mr. Ocken’s US History students will be treated to a cross-curricular experience this month when they travel to Popejoy Hall to see The Langston Highes Project, Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz featuring Ron McCurdy Quartet. The Langston Hughes Project is a joyful multimedia concert performance, created around Hughes’ kaleidoscopic jazz poem suite. “Ask your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz”- set during the period of the Harlem Renaissance-deals with the struggle for artistic and social freedom for African American people, and the show connects the historical dots between the Civil Rights Movement, the colonization of African countries and today’s landscape. This is Huges’ homage to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at home and abroad at the beginning of the 1960s. This trip is sponsored by City Councilor Don Harris.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT!
What happens when you don’t eat enough food?
Skipping meals can absolutely have significant effects on your brain and body.
When you skip a meal, your body starts to run low on its immediate glucose supply. Low blood sugar can zap your energy, making you feel sluggish and weak. It can also make it hard to concentrate because your brain doesn’t have the fuel it needs to think straight. Other low blood sugar symptoms can include shakiness, sweatiness, and irritability. Hello, hangriness.
