PAPA Celebrates Black History Month
Madam C.J. Walker- Madam C.J. Walker, born in the Louisiana Delta in 1867, created specialized hair products for African-American hair.  She invented the hair products out of necessity after suffering a scalp ailment.  Walker shared her creations with this statemen, “I want the great masses of my people to take a greater pride in their personal appearance and to give their hair proper attention.”  Walker promoted her products by traveling around the country giving lecture-demonstrations, later establishing Madam C.J. Walker Laboratories.  She was one of the first American women to become a self-made millionaire.  At the time of her death in 1919, Walker was considered to be the wealthiest African-American businesswoman and wealthiest self-made woman in America.  Her focus on civil rights was to petition President Woodrow Wilson (100 years ago) to make lynching a federal crime.  Her philanthropic endeavors included one of the largest donations of the time for the construction of an Indianapolis YMCA.
