PAPA Celebrates Black History Month
“One person plus a typewriter constitutes a movement.” This quote was from Pauli Murray, a fierce leader of the Civil Rights Movement. Murray had a tragic childhood, with both parents dying before she was a teenager. She lived with family members in Baltimore, eventually attending Hunter College in New York City. Her passion for civil rights blossomed in 1938 when Murray was denied enroll in the all-white college, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Among Murray’s many acts of defiance, she wrote. A prolific poet and author, she wrote many articles as she earned a law degree and co-founded the Congress of Racial Equality. Her written works were noticed by Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall who described her work, State’s Laws on Race and Color, as a “bible for civil rights lawyers.” President John F. Kennedy recognized Murray’s dedication to racial justice law and activism in 1961 when he appointed her to the President’s Commission on the Status of Women Committee on Civil and Political Rights. There is much more to learn about Pauli Murray which can be read at https://paulimurrayproject.org/pauli-murray/biography/
